Pinterest Fun: Put a Flower In It!

Gardening isn't just about planting seeds in simple pots or flower beds anymore. In a world of Pinterest and TikTok: creativity knows no bounds.

(* Full disclosure: I don’t really know how to use TikTok, and I don’t really think I’ll ever learn. I am who I am)

Not my image but I found it on Pinterest! So cute right??

Let’s look at some unique planters and see if we can’t fill up our homes and gardens with just a few more plants…

Check out my Pinterest Board all about these planters here!

I’ve done my share of searching the internet for new ideas of where I can put a plant, and I want to share some of my favorite everyday items that you may have lying around just waiting to become a planter!

1. Teacups and Saucers:

It’s like bringing Alice in Wonderland to life! Vintage teacups and saucers can be miniature planters with the right plants. Succulents or small herbs thrive in these tiny gardens! Be sure to use soil specific for succulents/cactus, like this. I don’t have many windowsills, but they could also work outdoors if you had a safe space! I ordered these succulents from Amazon and was pleasantly surprised at how healthy and intact they arrived!

2. Rain Boots:

They actually sell Rainboot Planters like this, or you can give old rain boots a new lease on life by transforming them into quirky planters! Whether brightly colored or adorned with playful patterns, rain boots can be pretty darn cute in the garden! And those holes in the bottom of your boots? Now they are custom-made drainage holes.

Not my image, but now I’m regretting getting rid of the boys’ old boots!!

3. Vintage Suitcases:

Ok, I love vintage suitcases as decor in the home, but vintage suitcases as statement planters?! Yes please! Stack them to create a tiered garden or open them up and fill them with soil for a unique raised bed. Succulents, herbs, or trailing flowers spilling out would be so cute!

4. Vintage Bicycles:

Give old bicycles new life by turning them into garden displays! After creating a sturdy stand or leaning it/attaching it to a tree (you don’t want it to tip!) you can attach baskets like these to the handlebars and frame. Plant cascading flowers or trailing vines in the baskets. Don’t have an old bike? No problem, you can use a premade bike-planter like this! Park your bicycle planter in a sunny spot and watch as it becomes a focal point in your outdoor oasis.

5. Birdcages:

I love this look! Repurpose ornate birdcages as elegant planters, or use this ready-to-plant birdcage to add a touch of vintage charm to any space. Hang them from tree branches or hooks, or place them on tabletops for an eye-catching display. Fill them with a mix of colorful flowers and trailing foliage, or even a hanging succulent like this to create a lush garden display.

I don’t have a birdcage planter yet, but I think they are so pretty!!

6. Tin Cans:

Transform ordinary tin cans into rustic planters: Drill drainage holes in the bottom, then fill them with soil and your favorite plants. I like putting marigolds in tin cans as the centerpiece for my outdoor tables, but just about any small annual or succulent would look adorable! Some folks may prefer to paint the cans, but if you find a vintage tin cannister, it looks pretty cute on it’s own!

7. Old Bathtubs:

Ok honestly, one of my favorite ideas but I don’t think I could get my husband to go for it! Bathtubs provide ample room for creating lush garden retreats filled with flowers, herbs, and even small trees. The clawfoot tubs are my personal favorite look, but any tub will do! (and honestly, I’ve even seen folks plant in an old toilet… ) Don’t have room for a full sized tub in your garden? Maybe this small tub planter will be more your speed.

8. Vintage Wheelbarrows:

Got a broken down wheelbarrow? Maybe one with holes in the bottom of it? Personally… I’ve got several! Whether it’s got a broken axel or a rusted out bottom, wheelbarrows make an ideal display for your favorite blooms. Perennials that come back every year with little-to-no maintenance make these planters a breeze: I’ve got lavender, bell flowers, tulips and daffodils planted in mine! This mix has bulbs that will bloom through spring and summer!

What else??

The possibilities are endless when it comes to finding creative containers for your plants! I hope you’re feeling inspired to give your plant babies a new home in an unexpected place.

Let your creativity bloom, and be sure to leave me a comment to let me know what fantastic ideas you came up with! I’m always looking for more yard art :)
